Magic lake studio
Magic Lake Studio, my third and current studio iteration, is more of what I love and less of what gets in the way of the music making process. The slow move away from the ‘big studio model’ has been an intentional stripping away of what is not necessary when it comes to making records. I seemed to always prefer the artist to track vocals or acoustic guitar in the control room within about 10 feet of where I am sitting rather than in an isolated booth in another room. I love the intense vulnerability and clear communication - body language, transparent energy, collaboration, and utter honesty - that comes from being together in the same room together. It also makes me more attentive to every detail of every take. I’ve always been able to move faster and more freely when things are in one room.
As a multi-instrumentalist, it is also my preferred way of writing and recording - everything plugged in ready to go, all mics live so nothing has to be switched out. It gives me the ability to ride the wave of energy as the creativity sweeps through the room. Please don’t mistake me, I also spend hours and hours on minute details in my recordings, but the initial spark often comes fast and if you’re not ready for it you will often miss it.
Magic Lake Studio is a culmination of everything I have loved about the last decade of my recording career plus.. …its on Pender Island, one of the southern gulf islands just across the Straight of Georgia. The ecology is breathtaking and has played a big part in the wholistic healing of my mind, body, and soul.
This style of recording I would almost compare to a retreat. Accommodation is provided when you come to record with me here on Pender so all you have to worry about is the art. You can come and immerse yourself in the island’s dynamic habitat and ecosystem and take advantage of the many walks/hikes around the island.
One could say its almost a sacred experience.
Hope to see you on Pender.
